The speed which a (university-based) spin-off company can deliver its invention is a critical factor to its overall success and attractivity for (continued, future) investment.
Within the university research community, there remain spirited and polarizing debates about the openness in which research is conducted, that is, the freedom and ability of faculty researchers to disseminate, communicate, collaborate, and publish at will, which incidentally, have long been recognized as the hallmarks of university-based research.
One way to increase the probability that a business investment will achieve the projected/desired returns is to address the question, are the about-to-be-invested assets’ value and materiality sustainable?
Should additional safeguards be introduced to university research communities where there remain spirited debates about research openness, i.e., the freedom of researchers to disseminate, communicate, collaborate, and publish at will.
